Drawing chibi

I started to try drawing chibi characters today by looking at some tutorials. I used to draw a lot when I was still a little mothafucka. I used to draw a lot of Dragon Ball Z and also some crazy things like monsters designed from my own fantasies. I design a lot with Photoshop and also Illustrator sometimes, but drawing anime and manga is not my piece of cake.

I was bored today, so I started to draw anime girls in chibi form. I hope you recognize them, Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid and Konachan from Lucky Star. The other two are just from some random tutorial found at DeviantART. I am definitely not going to be a mangaka, but what do you think of my chibi sketches? Where did you learn your skills from?

My poor drawing skills were learnt copying illustrations.

Christ, I should have responded to this earlier…

It looks pretty decent for someone who doesn’t draw that often, you just need some practice. Here’s some tips:

With the top right one, you might want to pipe down on the lines in the hair. It generally works better the fewer lines you use, preferably only the outline of it. Just look at most images on this site. Putting more lines into the hair makes it look greasy, in my opinion.

As for the bottom left one, look a bit into anatomy. I know it’s chibi, but if you make the limbs a wee bit more narrow around the elbow, wrist and knee, it’ll look better. If you don’t think you can get it quite right, just ask a girl to pose for you. If you can’t find a girl to pose for you, chloroform, ropes and a van might help.
